What Is Tempur® Material?

TEMPUR® pressure-relieving material™ is a breakthrough in sleep technology that will forever change the way you sleep. The original formula was developed in the early 1970's at NASA's Ames Research Center in an effort to relieve astronauts of the incredible g-forces experienced during lift-off. Fagerdala World Foams of Sweden spent almost a decade and millions of dollars researching and experimenting with the NASA material before discovering a way to produce a consistent and durable product.

The cellular structure of the TEMPUR®  pressure-relieving material™ is completely different. It's made up of billions of high density, viscoelastic memory cells. The cells are spherical with windows, and the key is... they're temperature sensitive. The high density of TEMPUR® pressure-relieving material™ makes the Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™ so durable that it's backed by an incredible 20-year limited warranty. Proper Support

The Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™ conforms to and supports your entire body, relieving the pressure that often causes stiffness, poor sleep, and pain.

Conventional mattresses exert counter-pressure that contorts your body into unnatural positions and restricts blood flow, causing you to toss and turn and wake up with pain.

Because of displacement, the waterbed creates what experts call the "hammock effect." This is an unnatural and unhealthy curve of the spine resulting from improper support.

Visco: resistant to change of shape.

Elastic: able to return to its original shape after being forced to change.

Imagine lying on a surface that knows exactly how far to let you "sink in" so that every point on the contour of your body is supported. Foundations:
An extremely important part of our Swedish Sleep System® is its support structure - the foundation or base. Complete your sleep system by choosing either our Platform Foundation or our Adjustable Bed Base. Both are covered in coordinating fabric with non-skid tops. Our warranty and performance guarantees are based on tests conducted on our mattresses and foundations as "systems." Your old foundation or box spring is not recommended for use with our mattresses. It may not provide a rigid base and could void your 20-year-limited warranty.

Classic Bed Foundation

Combine our high quality, trouble-free adjustable base with either our Classic or Deluxe Swedish Mattress to create your own Adjustable Swedish Sleep System. With the touch of a button on the wireless remote, you can adjust your Tempur-Pedic® into hundreds of relaxing positions.

The mattresses easily mold to the shape of the adjustable base to not only stay in place but also perform like no other adjustable bed mattress can. Dual system users will marvel at the nearly undetectable separation between the mattresses.

The patented Wallhugger® design keeps you closer to the wall and your nightstand, while providing total support to your head, neck and shoulders in a head-up position. Heavy duty construction provides guaranteed, trouble-free performance.

We're sure you are wondering where this material came from and how it was conceived. Ironically enough, the Tempur® material was originally developed by NASA. That's right, NASA. Back in the 1970s, NASA was experimenting with a material that would conform to the exact body weight and shape of any astronaut. The material was also developed to relieve the enormous G-forces experienced by astronauts during lift off, flight and descent into the earth's atmosphere. The material was highly promising, but proved to be highly difficult to manufacture and it suffered from durability problems.

NASA released the raw material to the industrial world in the early 1980s. Fagerdala World Foams (now part of Tempur-Pedic® International) of Varmdo, Sweden, a company specializing in technical foams, jumped at the opportunity to refine this highly promising product released by NASA. They realized the tremendous potential of this unique pressure relieving material. Fagerdala experimented with the product for almost a decade and perfected its composition and durability.

The result: An open-celled, visco-elastic, temperature sensitive material that senses body weight and temperature and then automatically adjusts and completely supports the user. This revolutionary material relieves the pressure that causes poor sleep; tossing and turning; and aches and pains. It is, without a doubt, a space-age material.

Keep in mind that all other visco-elastic materials on the market are not manufactured by Tempur-Pedic® and are, therefore, NOT THE SAME. Tempur-Pedic’s®  product claims come from millions of dollars spent on R&D, over a decade of experiments, as well as close associations with the medical community; and therefore, other visco-elastic materials should not be automatically accepted as offering the same benefits and durability as the TEMPUR® material!
